HTC EVO 4G to Get Android 2.2 Next Week

One of Scorpion Security Products clients, Sprint and HTC announced this week that Froyo will be available soon. Sprint is a large user of Scorpion’s Retail Security Device, The Scorpion. Story below…

It’s official: Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G will get Froyo starting next week.

Sprint will begin rolling out the Android 2.2 upgrade to EVO users on Tuesday, August 3, according to an announcement posted on the carrier’s Web site Thursday night. Sprint says the upgrade will be sent out to EVO users in waves. All users should have the software by the middle of the month.

If you own an EVO 4G, you’ll receive a notification on your phone when the upgrade becomes available. The software will then be sent over-the-air to your device and automatically installed. If you don’t want to wait, Sprint says you can manually download the upgrade starting Tuesday: Simply select the “HTC Software Update” option in the “System Updates” section of the phone’s main settings menu to force the process to begin.
The EVO Froyo Story

Word about the EVO’s Froyo upgrade hit the Web early on Thursday, thanks to an apparent leaked Sprint memo published by tech blog Engadget. While the memo’s authenticity has not been verified, the dates do line up with what we now know to be the carrier’s official plans.

According to Engadget’s information, Sprint will provide several EVO-specific changes along with the Android 2.2 upgrade, including new home screen widgets, a “flashlight mode” for the phone’s camera flash, and improvements to the phone’s video recording capabilities.

The memo posted on Engadget also says the upgrade is “a high priority for competitive reasons.” Sprint’s official announcement certainly echoes this sentiment; the announcement boldly proclaims Sprint as being “the first wireless carrier to bring Android 2.2 to customers.”

Technically, the EVO won’t be the first Android handset to get the Froyo upgrade; Google’s Nexus One phone took that honor late last month. But the EVO looks like it will be the first carrier-provided upgrade, since the Nexus One existed on multiple networks and was managed directly by Google.

That’s actually a bit of a dis to the Motorola Droid, which was widely expected to be the next Android phone to feel the Froyo love. The latest official info on the Droid now points to a “late summer” date, though unofficial leaks have suggested its upgrade could come within the next couple of weeks. The Droid X and Droid Incredible are also expected to be in line for Froyo in the very near future.

Verdantix calls Orange the most ecologically sustainable telco

Wed. July 28, 2010

Scorpion Security Products is dedicated to keeping our customers up to date on the latest Industry News even when it does not pertain to Retail/Cell Phone  Security Devices.

According to the 2010 “Green Quadrant” report published by Verdantix, an independent analyst firm that provides commercial analysis of climate change, sustainability and energy issues, Orange “stands out as the telecoms operator that has been most successful in creating, marketing and delivering telecoms solutions which offer sustainability benefits to business customers.” Orange already led the market in the 2009 issue of the Verdantix report.

According to David Metcalfe, Verdantix director, “Over the last 12 months, stronger organizational capabilities focused on sustainability have enabled Orange to make significant strides in implementing its sustainable business strategy. This positions Orange to succeed in winning new sustainable telecoms contracts as more and more business customers seek suppliers with top quality sustainability credentials.”

Verdantix compared 17 telecoms operators with significant European operations on 31 criteria using its proprietary Green Quadrant methodology. As part of its research, Verdantix conducted in-depth interviews with a focus group of 15 senior telecoms and IT buyers who also have responsibility for sustainability. Those buyers represented a wide segment of “one billion plus” revenue companies, including those in financial sectors, and food and beverage organizations. Research was conducted across multiple management tiers, from VP-level up to C-level.

Orange was recognized for maintaining its overall leadership position on customer sustainability propositions and for closing the gap on market momentum. Verdantix found that Orange’s internal sustainability performance satisfies customers’ environmental procurement criteria that is now a standard requirement across the market.

British Telecom and AT&T were also praised. Analysis was divided into two major sections: sustainable external customer offerings, and sustainable internal strategy. Orange was actually second to BT in the latter division. Verdantix also noted major improvements by AT&T, who ranked third place overall for their European and global divisions. This followed poor performance by AT&T in last year’s issue.

According to Antonin Shanahan, lead analyst on the report, telepresence has developed into a key money-saver for telcos. Shanahan also cites dramatic shifts toward M2M “smart” applications as highly influential to their “Green Quadrant” performance.
